Some serious artwork called for – a sculpture or two maybe?? Something that shows we’ll be GOING FURTHER FOR FAIRTRADE IN 2013. Speak to Ros (550688) for more information

Yorkshire’s historic Fairtrade success

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

Yorkshire has been declared the UK’s first Fairtrade Region. On Friday 18th January ceremonies will take place in Ilkley, Leeds and York to celebrate our new status.

The declaration marks the culmination of three years’ work by campaigners and traders across Yorkshire, and recognises the enormous support for Fairtrade across the region. The campaign received the support of Yorkshire bishops, sportsmen and sportswomen, schools, universities, faith groups, MEPs, Councils and artists including Ian McMillan, the Bard of Barnsley. Support came from MPs including Hilary Benn, Rachel Reeves and Greg Mulholland, who tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament supporting the campaign.

Ros Stanley, Secretary of Cherry Burton Fairtrade Group, said: “Becoming the first certified Fairtrade Region is a fantastic achievement. Everyone who’s bought, sold or supported Fairtrade anywhere in Yorkshire has contributed to this – the support really has been amazing, from Cherry Burton to Hull, Beverley to York, Holmfirth to Hornsea, Sheffield to Scarborough. It just shows how caring Yorkshire folk are.”
