British Food Fortnight

Friday, September 10th, 2004

The village celebrated British Food Fortnight in September 2004 with a ‘Best of British’ evening at the village pub, The Bay Horse. On the menu was fine local roast beef with all the trimmings, while the entertainment was provided by ‘The F.O.G.’. Their front man, Chris Berry, is better known for his journalistic skills as editor of ‘Farming in Yorkshire’. The enthusiastic audience also had the chance to win a number of fabulous raffle prizes which included joints of local beef and pork, a local free range duck, and bottled beers by Wold Top Brewery.

Well Done Lifestyle!

Thanks to Lifestyler David Hounsome who raised £65 for the Fairtrade Foundation last summer.

Go Beverley!

Best wishes to Beverley as they start working towards becoming a Fairtrade Town.

New Fairtrade sign!

The Parish Council noticeboard in the centre of the village is due to have a new header board fitted during Fairtrade Fortnight publicising our Fairtrade Village status.

Christine Peirson being awarded the Fairtrade Trophy by Rob Stanley

Congratulations to Christine Peirson, first winner of the new Cherry Burton Fairtrade Trophy, presented to her by the chairman, Rob Stanley, at the 2004 Village Show.

The Village Produce Association decided that an extra trophy was needed for the 2004 Village Show and that it should be called the “Fairtrade Trophy”. The Fairtrade Steering Group offered to provide the trophy and in exchange, the Village Produce Association has agreed to include Fair Trade in the appropriate group of classes.

The new “Fairtrade Trophy” is a bronze made in Burkina Faso. It is itself fairly traded and bought at cost price from the founder of Trading Roots, David Murden, in a gesture of his support for Fairtrade. The bronze entitled “Woman against the wind” is one of 250 copies of the original prize-winning African art.
